Do wear your pearls as you will find that no other gems add to and enhance one's
sensuality than that which is to be given by and derived from a
pearl.
Extending the Life, Luster and Iridescence of Your "Cultured Pearls"
Pearls are the only recognized gems created by a living creature... pearl oysters and mollusks.
Cultured pearls are form as a result of these creatures secreting a calcium carbonate
substance (nacre) around intentionally inserted beads (irritants). Over time, build up of nacre
layers on top of nacre layers result in subtly luminous, iridescent... yet, sensitive gems.
Regardless of your "cultured pearl" origin or type (Akoya Pearls, Freshwater Pearls, Paua Blue
Pearls, Tahitian Pearls or South Sea Pearls), it is a natural substance that should be kept free
from dirt, chemicals; handled and cleaned with care. While their surfaces are hard to the touch,
they are pearls, and much like teeth, their
nacre and sparkle can easily and quickly be ruined or
worn down to the very fabric of their un-natural center.
They are susceptible to the damages of chemicals such as perfume and hairspray, basic
household and body care substances, harsh handling, heat and abrasives. A very popular
quote in the pearling industry is "
pearl jewelry should be the last thing you put on and the first
thing you take off
." By following that simple rule of thumb and these basic and easy care
suggestions, you can preserve the body quality of your luminescent orbs for years of
enjoyment:
Cleaning your Pearl Gems
Skin moisturizer, body perspiration and natural body oil will lessen the pearls' luster and cause
discoloration and deterioration over time. Wipe them frequently with a soft damp, clean cloth.
Mix a drop of very mild soap such as baby soap and tepid / warm water in which to wash your
pearls, periodically. Rinse and pat the jewelry dry with chamois or other soft absorbent cloth.
(This is also true if your jewelry piece combines pearls with other gemstones and precious or
non-precious metals).
A silk bag, soft pouch, separate compartment of softly lined jewelry box or a pearl necklace
folder / holder (specifically made for long-term pearl jewelry storage) should be sufficient.
Pearls need to breath... avoid storing in an air-tight container or a safe for long periods of time
will cause the pearls to dry out resulting in discoloration, cracking and peeling.
To retain the pearls' sparkle and life, it is best to avoid
Storing your Pearls
Depending on the number of pearls, make up of the jewelry, a touch or drop of olive oil can be
massage into the pearls to assist them in maintaining their luster.
For pearls strung on silk thread, leather, cord, hemp, etc., wipe the jewelry with a damp cloth
dip in the above warm water solution... do air dry for a few minutes to avoid quick rotting of
these materials.
Pearl jewelry that includes other gemstones or metals should be stored flat so that no two
pearls or pearls and other gems rub during storage.
Storing your pearls with other jewelry as they are easily scratched.
Adding moisturizer to your hands while wearing pearl rings.
Contact with vinegar, lemon juice, perfume, hairspray or alcohol based solvents.
Exposing pearls to washing detergents, bleaches, ammonia or abrasive based cleaners;
Using abrasives, harsh detergents and jewelry cleaners... in any form, on the surface of the
pearls as this will result in a part or parts, thereof, being removed;
Enjoy wearing your
sensuous pieces of
cultured pearl jewelry!
Do clean your pearls often to remove build of sweat, body oils and the accidental
touch of perfume or moisturizers.
Paua (Abalone) Blue Pearl set in 92.5% Sterling Silver:  Our Sterling Silver Jewelry is
coated with Rhodium to give it the appearance of White Gold; to resist the tarnish associated
with non-Rhodium coated Sterling Silver Jewelry and to allow for easy cleaning.

As with all precious and non-precious metal, this coated metal will develop a "mild" tarnish,
however, it is easily cleaned by simply giving the metal a vigorous rub with dry, soft cotton
cloth or your designated jewelry cloth.
