Nacre thickness is the most important factor when measuring tahitian pearl quality. Common pearl shapes are round, sem round, semi baroque, baroque, ringed or circled, button, rice shape, flat shape.
Kokichi Mikimoto invented the method of culturing pearls in 1893 with the help of the akoya pearl oyster. Mabe pearls are large cultured pearls that are grown attached to the inside shell of oysters. Akoya pearls are the classic pearl and are round to oval in shape and produced in white and cream shades with silver or pink overtones. Freshwater pearls is a pearl harvested from the freshwater mussel and occur for the same reason the salt water pearls are produced in oysters. Freshwater pearls are often shaped like rice cereal, however, they can be cultured round or baroque.
Akoya or japanese pearls: probably the most well known name of a pearl type from the akoya oyster... pinctada fucata martensil. Most akoya pearls are still produced in japan but now some are also grown on an increasing scale in chaina and india. The akoya pearl oyster measures 6 to 9 cm across. Smaller nuclei are implated so the resulting pearls range from 2mm to 10mm.
South Sea pearls, Tahitian pearls and akoya pearls are saltwater pearls. Freshwater pearls come in beautiful colors of cream, white, yellow, orange, pink and lavender.
Blister pearls grow underneath the mantle on the inside of the oyster's shell. A technique first developed and perfected by Kokichi Mikimoto. The two main types of pearls are freshwater and saltwater.
The difference between a natural pearl and a cultured pearl is natural pearls are formed in pearl producing animal without man's intervention. Cultured pearls are formed in pearl producing animals by the deliberate intervention by man inserting irritant into the pearl producing animal.

Natural pearl forms as a result of a natural occurrence, the nucleus of which is an infinitesmally foreign intruder that enters the oyster in a natural process. Seeding - a process which stimulates the secretion of nacre and eventually the formation of a pearl.
Consisting of only nacreous concretion, keshis are not considered natural pearls since they are formed in oyster raised on the pearl farms. Keshis are however impossible to tell apart from natural pearls. Nacre is the secretion produced by a pearl oyster or mollusk to cover an irritant or parasite inside its shell.
Pearl glossary: baroque pearls do not have an axis of rotation and are of freeform shape. Circle or ringed pearls can be round, semi-round, semi-baroque, drop or baroque. Cultured pearls or Keshi Cultured pearls often spelt keishi, kashi, keishe or kieshi is the japanese word for non nucleated pearls both freshwater and saltwater and are composed entirely of pearl nacre.
While tahitian pearls can reach up to 16mm, perfectly round pearls above 13mm are hard to find. Baroque pearls such as drop, semi-drop and oval, being the largest amound of a farm's output are much easier to acquire in large size. Size of 8mm to 14mm are easier to find.
These four factors are evaluated when the pearls enter the wholesale marketplace. Luster is the maner in which light is reflected on the pearls surface showing iridescent color. The orient of a pearl depends greatly on how tfhe layers of nacre within reflects light and how wide the light spreads across the pearls surface. Pearls are express in mm. A Quality pearl has very slight or no surface defects visible to the naked eye. Owing to nature's involvement it is very unusual to find a Tahitian Pearl totally devoid of surface defects. These pearls are considered as fine pearls and generally exhibit excellent to gem quality luster.
Pearls, unlike a diamond is graded using the naked eyes. Each pearl is evaluated and sorted according to its size, shape and surface defects. The four levels of grades used for Tahitian cultured pearls are A, B, C and D. This pearl grading factor is refered to as the Tahitian System.
Pearl Grading Factors: A Quality pearls are considered as fine pearls and generally exhibit excellent to gem quality luster. B Quality pearls shows slight visible imperfections or flaws and exhibit high, medium or good luster. C Quality grade pearls show medium quality luster with flaws distribute over less than 60 percent of their surface. D Quality graded pearls are considered rejects regardless of their luster.
Overtone is a color impression. Natural overtone is called color spill and refers to the pearl having a colored halo around its shadow when placed on a white surface in direct light. Orient is an effect somewhat prismatic that moves. The
Overtone and orient can be viewed on natural, thick nacre and solid nacre cultured pearls by candling. Candling is holding the pearls close to an intense white light source to observe the rainbow of colors inside the pearl. Dark pearls with natural orient have highly transparent dark nacre.
